CHAPTER 1 IntroductionStudent service is known to be the practice of offering service to students that improves their overall well-being. In today’s competitive environment where students have many options they must be satisfied on the given services by the institution in order for them to retain and as well as to gain stronger relationships. In relation with today’s competitive environment that consist of different higher education institution, students are more likely to have many options. For instance as cited on Philippine Universities and College Guide (2017) in Region IV-A CALABARZON has a total of 164 universities and colleges including their satellites, and this is one of the reason why one higher education institution itself must improve their strategies in giving students the quality of service that they need. In Southern Luzon State University, the Office of Student Affairs is known to be the one who builds supportive and inclusive communities that promote social responsibility, encourage discussion and debate, recognize accomplishments, and foster a sense of belonging among their students and members. The said office delivers its services through different offices and one of it is the Student Welfare Services, under this are Orientation and Information Services, Guidance and Counselling, Career and Job Placement, Economic Enterprise and Student Handbook Development.One powerful tool on improving the quality of students life and learning inside an institution is from evaluating the quality of service that they give. In addition to that, having a strong and effective educational system results in greater performance of the students. Students must feel that they are being guided and supported on strategic plannings, in strengthening their retention initiation, meeting the accreditation requirements and to identify areas of strength and note the progress towards the campus goal. In-line with the services, Office of Student Affairs and the persons behind these are the one responsible to meet the said goals in order to help students not only academically but also in their physical, emotional, social aspects/ability. Background of the studyFor every service organization inside a higher education institution, student’s as the consumers serves as an important aspect and is highly related to evaluate the service quality they are experiencing. In addition to that, students as customers are not only concerned with the nature of service but also with the quality of output received by them. As a nursing student here in Southern Luzon State University, the researher observed that there are different services offered by the institution. One of it is the Student Welfare Services under this are five (5) areas namely: Orientation and Information Services. Guidance and Counselling, Career and Job Placement, Economic Enterprise and Student Handbook Development. According to the website of Southern Luzon State University, it forges educational partnership that advances student learning, creates learning environment that emphasizes the institution’s desired educational outcomes for students, engages students in active learning, helps students develop coherent values and ethical standards, and as well as to communicate high expetations fpr learning. The researcher come up with this study to know if the Nursing students themselves knows the services under the Student Welfare Services offered by the Office of Student Affairs as well as to know if the respondents are experiencing a good quality service given by the university and if this does not cause any problems or burden to the respondents.  Objectives of the Problem The study was conducted to identify nursing student’s level of awareness towards the quality of the services offered by the Office of Students Affairs in Southern Luzon State University in Lucban, Quezon.Specifically, the researcher wants to verify answers from the following:1. To determine the level of awareness of the respondents regarding the services offered by the Office of Student Affairs. 2. To determine the quality of service offered by the Office of Student Affairs of Southern Luzon State University in terms of Orientation and Information Services, Guidance and Counselling Services, Career and Job Placement Services, Economic Enterprise Development and Student Handbook Development. 3. To identify which service under the Student Welfare Services of Student Affairs has the highest quality of service evaluated by the nursing students’4. To identify the relationship between the respondents’ level of awareness and quality of service offered by the Student Welfare Services under the Office of Student Affairs. Significance of the studyThe data gathered by the study would be beneficial to the Nursing students for them to express their feelings and evaluate the services given by the school. To the Office of Student’s Affairs for them to be aware on how sure the respondents know their services that are being offered as well as the level of quality service given by the student’s and to know their strengths and weaknesses. To the Clinical Instructors for them to know what state of services does the nursing students are satisfied with and on what services are lacking of quality. This will also address them on what improvements are needed to be done and focus with. To the Student’s of Southern Luzon State University for them to be aware and have insights on what are the services offered by the school’s Office of the Student Affairs in case that they are confuse and unaware of the services given by the university. To the readers if by chance they would be reading this they will be able to understand how important is the services offered by an institution as well as its way of giving the best service quality. And lastly this will serve as a reference for future researcher’s that has interests in this kind of study. Scope and DelimitationThis study aims primarily to identify the nursing student’s level of awareness towards the services offered by the Office of Students Affairs in Southern Luzon State University in Lucban, Quezon this first semester, School Year 2017. It also seeks to find out the quality of service of the student welfare services offered by the Office of Student Affairs and its relation to the respondents level of awareness. The respondents consist of all the Nursing Student in Southern Luzon State University. Definition of termsTo facilitate understanding of this study, the following terms were hereby defined operationally:Career and Job Placement- Refers to the assistance provided for vocational and occupational fitness and employment among the Southern Luzon State University students.Economic Enterprise- Refers to the unit of economic organization which creates opportunities for enterprise education and activities.Guidance and Counselling- uses integrated approach to the development of well-functioning individuals primarily by helping them utilize their problems; socially, mentally and emotionally.Level of Awareness- the respondents ability to know or be aware of something. Orientation and Information- service used to facilitate orientation programs and informations to help students in their adjustment life inside the university.Quality of Service- how well a delivered service in an organization/institution conforms to the student’s expectations.Student Handbook- Serves as the guide and includes basic information’s about the University. Southern Luzon State University Office of Student Affairs and Servcies- an organization inside an instutution which help students in their academic, financial, social, emotional and physical aspects such as Orientation and Information Services, Guidance and Counselling, Career and Job Placement, Economic Enterprise Development and Student Handbook Development.
