In the past few
decades, many nations have experienced quite a huge number of natural
catastrophe (Thurairajah,
2008).

For instance, on 11th March 2011, Japan was struck by a great earthquake with a
magnitude of 9.0 on the Richter scale which followed by a disastrous tsunami
and it is said to be the largest recorded earthquake in the history of Japan (Oskin, 2017). As a pioneer in
crisis management, Japan is in a constant state of readiness for the arrival of
the “big one” (McCurry, 2011). Compare to
Malaysia, it is a country which doesn’t actually experience many earthquakes because
Malaysia is located out of the Ring of Fire (Uihua,
2015).

So far, Malaysia has only faced strong vibrations and aftershocks after its
neighbours were slap by strong earthquakes.

However, experts believe that even though
Malaysia is not prone to earthquake, the odds of an earthquake striking Peninsula
Malaysia cannot be ruled out (Bernama, 2013). As a result, a huge
number of Malaysian citizens are not prepared for earthquake. Many Malaysian
has taken safety issue for granted because Malaysia is often regarded as a safe
country, so they assume that Malaysia is safe from disasters too (Thye,
2015).

This leads to the question, how aware and prepared are Malaysian citizens in
facing huge earthquake.

In this article, we are going to gauge the
level of awareness and preparedness of Malaysian residents. A survey was
conducted during this research and the level of awareness and preparedness of
Malaysian residents are still low. A study on the awareness of Malaysian citizens
on earthquake will throw light to the future of our country regarding disaster
management. In this article also, it is divided into two sections. The first
section is going to be mainly about the country itself and the findings based
on our survey and research. The second section is a review on how Malaysia can
improve the system in order to lessen the impact of earthquake and the education
needed for citizens so that they are prepared for the worst.
